Halo’s XCDs are new for 2011. The wheelset may not be the most bling bit of kit but displays the robustness and versatility that keeps long-term loves on our bikes.
The deep-flange hubs resemble those on the Pro-Lite Alleins, but a slightly wider rim and four extra spokes up front mean a few extra grams. This isn't enough to hinder the performance of the XCDs; they exhibit the same speed boost as any other lightweight wheels.
Although not the stiffest we've tested, when shod with reasonable rubber they track neatly and have held up well. Double-butted J-bend spokes should be available and simple to replace if you mangle them.
Sealed cartridge freehub bearings make for simple and infrequent maintenance, although the soft splines of the freehub body are more prone to cassette damage with loose cassette sprockets.
With quick release axles and 23mm rims, they’re in the realm of cross-country (rather than trail/all-mountain) and balk at higher volume tyres.
