Silverback unveiled a new hardtail, the Signo Tecnica, at Eurobike 2013. Unusually, the bike marries the trail-taming properties of a 29in front wheel with the weight-saving agility of a 650b (27.5in) rear wheel. It takes advantage of a dual-position RockShox fork to develop what the designers call a “dual personality”, and will cost €1,799.
The theory is that steep and technical descents can be tackled with the 29in front wheel, running on the more plush 140mm travel setting of the RockShox Revelation fork. Then, for a quick singletrack blast or a climb, you switch to the 110mm option.
The triple-butted aluminium frame has a 66.5-degree head angle and 430mm chainstays. The Signo Technica weighs a claimed 11.6kg (25.6lb). Check it out in the video below.

2014 Scalera road range
The Scalera is Silverback’s top-of-the-range road race bike, and has been updated for 2014 with changes to its frame, fork and spec, although the basic geometry is familiar. Fork offset has been reduced from 45mm to 41mm in the three largest of the four sizes, but the distinctively high, flat top tube is retained for the three builds.
In a bold move, Silverback have dropped the disc brake configuration of the award-winning Scalera Pro, in favour of what product manager and designer Raoul De Villiers describes as “traditional, clean road bike lines”.
The Scalera 1 has a Dura-Ace 11-speed groupset, weighs 7.4kg (16.3lb) and costs €4,999. The 11-speed, Ultegra-equipped Scalera 3 tips the scales at 7.8kg (17.2lb) and costs half the price.

The Scalera is complemented by the carbon Space and aluminium Strela, with two- and three-spec options respectively. In fact, Silverback have been busy extending, revising and improving all their mountain and road bikes for next year.
The German team use their own proprietary moulds, and place an emphasis on getting the frame right first. Then a range of component specifications is chosen with the aim of delivering “Best in Class” metrics. Own-brand finishing kit has been introduced throughout.
