Sustrans have produced a free guide of essential top tips to help schools and parents encourage more of the nation’s children to start cycling.

The national charity claim that only four percent of UK children travel to school on a bike or push-powered scooter, and hope the new guide will make it easier for teachers and parents to encourage youngsters to cycle.

The guide is available now but will be officially launched in Bike to School Week in June 2013. It contains a six-week action plan, tips, a calendar of useful events and activities, and lessons to help make cycling fun for more youngsters.

Gary Shipp, Sustrans national projects coordinator for education and young people, said: “We’re really excited to launch this new guide to help schools encourage more children to cycle to school. Our ultimate aim is that every week becomes Bike to School Week!”

The guide’s arrival comes in the same week that the CTC and British Cycling have urged the public to support campaigns to get cycling lessons put on the National Curriculum.
