British folding bike outfit Brompton has issued a voluntary recall on bikes manufactured from April 2014 – May 2017.
The recall relates to the FAG BB66 bottom brackets present in the brand's bikes, which according to Brompton has had a higher than expected failure rate.
Brompton points out the component meets international safety standards but "does not meet the standards which Brompton sets for its components."
In a video released on the company's website, Brompton CEO Will Butler-Adams explains: “We have seen this increase in failure, as a result, we have decided to do a recall of all of our bikes from April 2014 through until May 2017."
According to Brompton, the failure is only in one in every 5,000 bikes, but the brand still feels it necessary to issue a recall.
To solve the problem Brompton is asking owners to take their bikes to a certified Brompton dealer where the bottom brackets will be replaced free of charge.
The bikes affected can be any model manufactured during this time period and will have a serial number between 1403284144 and 1705150001 — the serial number can be found on the ID plate or sticker on the back side of the seat tube.
