The HipLok Pop is a steel cable lock that clips to itself, allowing it to be worn around your waist while riding. Unlike the chain-link Hiplok V1.5 and Lite models, the Pop is far simpler and much cheaper.
At 366g (400g claimed) with a plastic coating, the Pop is light enough to not distract while riding. We found it comfortable to wear and the firm cable holds its rounded shape around your waist. For longer rides we’d still prefer the lock off our body, but it’s a clever solution to carrying a lock nonetheless.
The 1.3m locking circumference is perfect for road bikes and commuter bikes, but not quite long enough to lock up a long wheel mountain bike without removing the front wheel.
Since the 10mm diameter coated steel cable is simple to cut with decent bolt cutters, the Pop is best suited to irregular commuters and users in safer areas. Hiplok claim the Pop is its lowest security lock; a trade-off given the weight and price.
The curved key (three included) is quick to use and we never experienced any sign of jamming. This style of key hole is difficult to pick and the keys feel strong.
The Pop is available in a range of colours and will fit waist sizes between 24-42in. While not a truly secure option, the Pop is convenient for scooting up to the shops or as a secondary lock to a D-lock.
