The OnGuard PitBull is on the money and tough at this price

Whereas the likes of Kryptonite and Abus rely on clever design to make their locks secure, OnGuard rely on brute strength. The PitBull’s shackle is made of hardened steel and is immensely tough, and the armoured-walled lock barrel is no wimp either.

That’s not to say there aren’t some clever touches here: the lock mechanism is pick- and pull-protected and has a protective drill-resistant face plate, and the lock mechanism is fixed at both ends of the shackle where earlier OnGuard locks had a single fixing.

After five minutes of hand tool abuse the PitBull was still operating, albeit slightly stiffer in the lock mechanism than when it was straight out the box.

In our second test using power tools we severed the shackle in just over a minute which, for a lock that’s as reasonably priced as this, is quite acceptable. Remember, anything over a minute with the portable angle grinder is pretty darn good.
