Close-fitting super-light gilet let down by lack of breathability

Mavic use their Duralite SL fabric for this featherweight windstopper. The Helium is gossamer light yet still gave protection from the wind and rain.

An off-centre zip keeps the soft-lined neck snug, but if things heat up it needs two hands, or a deft touch, to undo. On the bike, the form-fitting cut and light fabric mean the Helium is comfortable for easy sessions, but even plentiful laser-cut perforations aren’t great for breathability.

Mavic say the Helium is designed to fit “the fittest cyclists” so it fits slimmer athletes, but those with broad shoulders and chest need to upsize. And the yellow ‘M’ logo’s a dead ringer for a certain UK budget supermarket – not good on an £80 gilet.
