The Assos Intermediate Evo is designed for use in temperatures between 10- 20°C, and no other garment we've tried manages to cope as well with balancing body temperature in these temperate conditions.
A good base layer is essential for cold weather riding; everyone should own at least one. The base layers from Norwegian outdoor clothing masters Helly Hansen have been some of our favourites since the dawn of biking and this, the Charger Half-Zip base, is another great garment out of their stable.
Following the same quality theme as the rest of the great Sombrio range, the Triton jersey has a great cut for wearing over armour or without and, being made from Coolmax material with mesh panels.
Gore's latest jacket is a masterpiece. Their Windstopper fabric does exactly what it's supposed to, and it shrugs off showers.

This simple but super effective top has been a frosty ride favourite for ages. The Windfoil membrane is sandwiched between a fleecy front and backed with a fast wicking inner face to keep you cosy but surprisingly dry, even when the air is icy.
I really liked the relaxed cut of this jersey - the Large is loose without being shapeless. Being an mtb top designed for use with a rucksack, there's just one flush, zippered pocket.
The Matrix boasts a load of features for the money. For starters, it's a great poly fabric in a technical lightweight mesh weave. The side panels and underarms are an even lighter, airier mesh.
Sizes run enormous – I fitted a Small, with room for pies to spare. Surprisingly decent lightweight fabric with reflective piping and three pockets. A real bargain for the price!
The Carbon Ion is feathery light and breezy – it's so minimal you'll have to carefully choose your undergarments. It packs a big performance punch into the porous fabric though, and features 5% of carbon fibres to fight bacteria build-up and static. For hot weather rides it's the best choice. It even outperforms most sleeveless jerseys because it wicks sweat so well and allows a cooling breeze to circulate. There are three small back pockets, a smooth full front zip and two tiny reflective logos.

Classic cut and technical peformance makes this a safe mid layer bet
A sheep- and human-technology combo garment that we just love
The LE jersey is an ideal heavy duty outer
More than a simple windstopper
One of the primary ingredients of Cannondale's Carbon clothing range is the use of carbon from organic coconuts! The compound is incorporated into the fabric to absorb odours and is reactivated during the wash cycle.
The Mack Daddy is a relaxed top for a more relaxed style of riding. That doesn't mean it's short on performance or features, though. The double-plated, lightweight fabric controls moisture management.
If Rapha did women's clothes, this is what it might look like. It's classy, wool and more than fulfils their pink quota. Better still, it's from Swobo, the San Franciscan company, that's out to reinvent cycling clothing with natural fibres.
Assos clothing is a lot more than just cycle clothing, it's almost a uniform. The style, fit and function is all about top-end performance and the Equipe looks fantastic if you've got the body to do the cut and colours justice.
DHB are relatively new on the mountain bike scene but they're already turning out great clothing at affordable prices. This is your classic short-sleeve, medium-zip cycling jersey with three back pockets. The polyester technical
If you're not the all out racey type and you want something that offers a lot of warmth and yet is breathable, then there isn't much wrong with this offering from Gore.
Pearl Izumi have been at the forefront of making top quality kit for a long time. A couple of years ago it seemed as though their range had not moved on, as if it had stagnated and there was nothing new to be had.
Okay, so the Swiss-made Assos stuff is a bit 'roadie', but get over that and you'll find a bike clothing company with a passion for detail that leaves most others standing.
It's usually the wind rather than the cold that really gets to you on a winter's ride - and going faster just makes the sting worse. This Nike jersey aims to combat that, with its thermal insulation.
The Loop has subtle looks and all the detailing we expect from the icon masters. The textured fabric has a smooth inner surface for an appreciably soft, sweat-sucking feel, and it dries fast so it's great for scorching days.
This is basically the race kit worn by DH legend Steve Peat, and it's some of the best looking around. The jersey has a few cool touches, such as small elastic cuffs, a comfy V-neck and a cut that works well with or without armour.
