Our review
Great value pedals with the same dynamics as Shimano's pro-level models

The entry-level R540 road pedals are based on Shimano’s long-running and successful SPD-SL design and are great all-round performers. True to Shimano’s ethos, they work in exactly the same fashion as the company’s much pricier models, but without the lighter, more exotic materials.

There’s enough release tension adjustment to make them a good beginner’s pedal, but they can be wound up tight for more experienced riders. Smooth bearings and great sealing – along with easy servicing and great dealer backup – add even more to what are great budget pedals. They come with a set of standard 6° float cleats and are compatible with all current Shimano SPD-SL cleats. Weight is 336g a pair.
