Race Face Aeffect crankset review£130.00

Affordable, direct mount all-rounder

BikeRadar score3.5/5

Aeffect is a brand new addition to the already extensive Race Face single-ring crankset arsenal that brings the super easy chainring swap talent of its Cinch system down to a whole new level of affordability.

Technology trickle-down doesn’t extend to the 30mm alloy axle of more expensive Cinch cranks though, so it winds onto the tapered splines of a 24mm diameter EXI axle. EXI is a well proven and consistently secure setup that Race Face has evolved over many years. While it doesn’t get the extra-crisp machining finish of Turbine and Atlas, the forged Aeffect crankarm construction with its assorted pockets is also classic Race Face and delivers perfectly acceptable stiffness for the low price and competitive weight.

The direct mount five-arm Cinch ring is definitely a real bonus in terms of user-friendly performance. The lock ring removes easily with an old-style cartridge-bearing BB tool that most shops will have lying around if you don’t and means you can fit single-rings in various sizes and colours or multi-chainring spiders.

This version comes complete with either a 30- or 32-tooth ‘spiderless’ ring pre-fitted and it’s a full-spec, smooth-running, quiet and secure narrow/wide tooth ring complete with extensive laser etching. The anodised finish of the arms is more durable than Shimano XT and they’re compatible with a wide range of bottom brackets.
