Liv Langma joins the disc-brake brigade

Disc-brake model added to the new road-race line from Liv

With the tagline 'fly to the summit', the Langma race bike from Liv Cycling was unveiled to the world at the end of 2017. For those who want added control on the descents that come after, Liv have now added a disc-brake-equipped model.

The top-of-the-range Liv Langma Advanced SL 0 scored an impressive 4.5 out of 5 stars in our recent review, but it's currently only available as a rim-brake model.

Designed for the rigours of pro-level racing, the Langma — whose name is taken from the Tibetan name for Mount Everest — is a bike adept at climbing and racing. It fills the niche in the Liv range between the aero-focused Envie and the endurance-focused Avail providing, Liv says, "the ideal bike for events such as the Giro Rosa where it was first ridden by Team Sunweb women in 2017".

Liv Langma Advanced Pro 1 frame design

Liv Cycling is a firm proponent of women's specific frame geometry, which means that the geometry of the Langma is distinct from those of its sibling-brand Giant Bicycles, although frames are constructed in Giant's facilities, unsurprisingly.

The frame has aerodynamic elements such as a bladed tube shape on the seat tube and seatpost

The Langma Advanced Pro 1 Disc still boasts a carbon frame, but is a lower-priced Advanced carbon layup rather than the Advanced SL found in the top-of-the-range models. This gives a slight weight penalty, but, in recompense, helps bring the price down.

The frame is designed with aerodynamic elements to help give it an advantage in race conditions, plus a carbon layup tuned to provide strength, stiffness and compliance where needed. This includes bladed seat tube and downtime, narrow top tube, integrated seat tube and a chunky bottom-bracket area designed to optimise power transfer when pedalling.

For more details on the frame geometry and design, take a look at the full review of the top-of-the-range Langma Advanced SL 0 review, as the frame design is the same across both bikes.

Overall, the bike is striking with a glossy dark-red paint finish plus neat internal cable routing.

Liv Langma Advanced Pro 1 finishing kit

This model of the Langma is fitted with a Shimano Ultegra 11spd groupset including Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes. The chainrings on the crankset are 34/50t paired with a wide 11-30t cassette that offers plenty of range for climbing should you want plenty of easier gears to pace yourself with. A press-fit BB72 bottom bracket finishes off the crankset with a KMC X11EL-1 chain.

Rolling stock consists of the Giant SLR-1 Disc Wheelsystem wheelset with Giant Gavia tubeless tyres in 700x25c. It's interesting to note that Liv provide tubeless setup on all models off the peg within the Langma range, a feature that helps shave more weight off the setup.

For those who'd like a little extra comfort on their ride, the wheels are able to accommodate up to a 28c width tyre and for the tech-focused, it also comes with RideSense ANT+/Bluetooth sensor installed.

Finishing kit includes Giant SL aluminium handlebars and stem plus the carbon composite integrated Giant Variant seat post. A women's specific Liv Contact SL Forward saddle completes the bike.
